Site-specific installation, neons signs in the high school gymnasium
25th Nadežda Petrović Memorial, Čačak, Serbia
My practice often involves infiltrating art into public and institutional spaces. A gymnasium is a place that has a significant influence in the development of (self)discipline, (self)control as well as a consciousness of one’s body. The installation draws attention to the current obsession with the fetishism of the body, the need to discipline it, pump the muscles, stay young and fit. The neon words activate the space of a gymnasium by introducing a contemporary visual vocabulary, words that can go together to create a certain flow in the meaning as well as juxtapose the contraries, perplexing the common place. The intention is to encourage visitors to ponder the current preoccupation with the beauty stereotypes, by ‘enlightening’ the possible alternative values.
